"Online Banks Prohibited from Accessing Customers' Photos and Contacts by FG Directive"

The Nigerian Government Prohibits Loan Apps from Accessing Customers' Photos and Contacts, with Google to Implement Policy Changes

Loan apps operating in Nigeria will no longer be permitted to access customers' photos and contacts, as directed by the Nigerian federal government. Google has announced a new policy update effective from May 31, 2023, which will prevent loan apps on the Play Store from accessing user contacts and photos. The update is expected to protect loan app users from the intrusive loan retrieval methods commonly employed by loan apps in Nigeria and other countries. The Nigerian government has applauded Google's new policy, which aligns with its efforts to safeguard customers' privacy from loan app companies. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has recently registered 170 loan apps out of 200 operating in the country. Additionally, Google has updated its Developer Programme Policy, which requires digital money lenders in Nigeria, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Kenya to comply with regulatory rules by January 31 or risk being taken down.
