"Carolyn Bryant Donham, the Accuser in Emmett Till's Case, Passes Away Following Cancer Battle"

Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman who accused black teenager Emmett Till of making improper advances towards her, which ultimately led to his lynching, has passed away at the age of 88. She had been battling cancer and died in hospice care in Westlake, Louisiana on April 25th. Till's murder in August 1955 became a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement, particularly after his mother insisted on an open-casket funeral to expose the brutalization of her son. Till had traveled to Mississippi to visit relatives when Carolyn Bryant accused him of making advances towards her in a grocery store. Till's cousin, the Rev. Wheeler Parker, claimed Till had simply whistled at her. Evidence suggests that a woman identified Till to Carolyn's husband Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam, who subsequently killed him. Despite the men's confession to Look magazine, an all-white jury acquitted them. In an unpublished memoir obtained by the Associated Press in 2022, Donham claimed she was unaware of what would happen to Till. She was 21 years old at the time of the accusation.
